Creative Lead

A mix of team management, capacity planning, client work, and business development.


The successful applicant will provide leadership to our design team, managing UI and graphic designers to the highest of standards of quality and efficiency. Applicants must have a background in visual design, excellent communication skills, great people instincts, and strong accountability for team success. As a team member with hiring responsibilities, this role is not a part of the union bargaining unit.

Job Responsibilities

Team Management

  • Accountable for a team of designers
  • Recruit, hire, train, and retain design team members
  • Manage a team budget for overhead and staffing
  • Help Middle Seat grow its surge capacity by building a stable of contractors who can jump in quickly and cost effectively on client design work
  • Guide team members to identify and work toward professional development goals, including by providing periodic performance reviews for all staff
  • Provide ongoing creative feedback and performance management
  • Guide the design team’s ability to respond professionally to direction, constructive critique, and client feedback
  • Manage graphic design needs, branding needs, and UI design engagements
  • Keep team informed about company-wide processes, policies, and priorities
  • Act as ambassador for the design team to other teams
  • Other responsibilities as requested

Capacity Planning

  • Delegate design responsibilities across both internal and external work and monitor progress of all projects and requests
  • Triage incoming client and internal requests, and ongoing design needs
  • Develop system for visibility into team capacity for forecasting and sales awareness

Client Work

  • Establish and oversee best practices, systems, and processes for the design team to meet high standards for innovation, accessibility, communication, collaboration, and efficiency – delivering work on time and of an exceptional quality
  • Use data to innovate advertising creative that is unique, performant, and accomplishes client goals
  • Create systems for memorializing brand guidelines and brand documentation
  • Provide creative direction to design team members to ensure best practices are executed
  • Incorporate emerging design and branding best practices and help implement across Middle Seat teams
  • Develop process for thorough design quality assurance on all creative work, including website projects
  • Contribute design work as needed
  • Maintain and direct a replicable, reliable system for managing projects

Business Development

  • Pitch prospective clients on creative work
  • Attend new business meetings to assess needs, budget, and fit for potential client engagements
  • Develop strategies for packaging design services to clients
  • Onboard new clients and provide team members with relevant information to execute new work
  • Work collaboratively with leadership team members on full-service proposals when needed
  • Ensure sales documents for design work are maintained in adherence with established company processes
  • Other responsibilities as requested


  • Minimum 1-2 years experience managing teammates
  • Minimum 5-7 years experience in digital design
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to convey complex ideas in an accessible manner to both designers and non-designers
  • Demonstrated aptitude in leadership, management, and collaboration
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Curiosity as it relates to graphic and UI design disciplines, as well as the work of our ads and emails teams
  • Remarkable integrity and discretion
  • Passion for progressive politics and social change

Strongly Preferred but Not Required

  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, and Figma
  • Expertise with WordPress
  • Experience with CRMs such as Blue State Digital, NGP VAN, ActionKit, Action Network, etc.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary starts between $78,000 and $88,000
    • Commensurate with years and depth of experience
